If you choose well, you\u2019ll be settling in a country that not only supports your business but your lifestyle goals too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge, however, is that like building your ideal business, there&#8217;s no step by step playbook that you can follow. You need to do the research, do some recon visits and spend time finding the perfect place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What you deem as the \u201cbest country to live in\u201d may not be the same for your friends and other entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I value proximity to mountain bike trails, a strong internet connection and quiet weekends in nature, you may value proximity to a beach, a strong cafe culture and party scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some countries have perks that others just don\u2019t come close to. Favourable tax regimes, ease of residency applications, solid internet connections and safety are just some of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, I\u2019ll go over some of the most entrepreneurial countries to live in, from my own perspective of someone running an online business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important for you to remember that <strong>this is just a thought exercise<\/strong>. This list is <strong>entirely subjective<\/strong> based on my own research, interests and priorities. These are countries I&#8217;ve considered for the needs of myself and my family, nothing more. class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how-much-does-location-matter\"><\/span>How Much Does Location Matter?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before I moved to Andorra, I had some strong notions of where I wanted to spend the rest of my life. All of that quickly changed once I became <a href=\"https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/how-i-became-location-independent\/\">location independent<\/a> and started moving around continents, looking for a new home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some countries offered a highly appealing \u201cfun\u201d lifestyle, while others offered stability and a quiet environment. To make the decision making process more challenging, I also had to take into account the needs of my wife, future family and the business I was building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back then life took a focus on finding a location that ticked off all these boxes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Access to the environment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Affordable cost of living<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agreeable climate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ease of getting residence permit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proximity to supermarkets and shopping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proximity to a major international airport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reasonable tax system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reliable, fast internet connection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limited commitment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of this probably makes sense to you, with the exception of \u201climited commitment\u201d. What I mean by this is, being able to \u201ctry before you buy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different countries typically involve different languages, cultures, banking systems, cuisines, education systems for your kids, driving on a different side of the road and so on. Boquete, Panama.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So when it was time for us to make this decision, I wasn\u2019t keen on buying a $500,000 property or making a huge investment in some sort of government fund just to get a residence permit. This gave us an \u201ceasy out\u201d in case things didn\u2019t go as planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andorra ticked most of these boxes for me \u2014 which I\u2019ll get to in a moment. I can comfortably sustain a business, spend time in a nice home eating healthy food and also make the most of the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there may be locations where startup funding is easier to come by or business networking groups are more prevalent, these weren\u2019t a factor for me. So it\u2019s important to consider what you\u2019re seeking first, before picking a country from a list on a random website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does location really matter? Some would say \u201cnot so much\u201d. To me, it makes a world of difference. If you\u2019re an entrepreneur with the privilege of location independence that gives you the freedom to choose where you can live, why wouldn\u2019t you pick the perfect place?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-to-consider-before-making-the-move\"><\/span>What to Consider Before Making the Move<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As exciting as it sounds to pack your bags and fly halfway across the world, there\u2019s a lot that goes into \u201cshortlisting\u201d the right country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, you may not have the same restrictions as someone with a brick and mortar business but there are a couple of things you\u2019ll want to keep an eye out for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ease-of-residency-for-entrepreneurs\"><\/span>Ease of Residency for Entrepreneurs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you go ahead and set up a remote office in a country that offers amazing tax benefits and cheap labor, find out what residency programs it offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While getting a visa from employment is becoming increasingly difficult in most developed countries, it\u2019s often much easier for those of us who own a business.<br><br>How much will you need to invest in an entrepreneur visa? Do you need to enroll in a local social security scheme? How long is your visa valid for? You\u2019ll certainly want a reliable internet connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, if you run an eCommerce business \u2014 even if you outsource to a 3PL, you&#8217;ll probably end up in a situation where you wish you could see your product in person.<br><br>These are only a few examples but you get the gist. Once you know what your basic business requirements are, you can start narrowing your search down until you\u2019re looking at your most viable options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"maturity-of-your-business\"><\/span>Maturity of Your Business<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many countries offer schemes to come to their country and start a local business. This sounds great, but if you don\u2019t know the business culture and you have zero local credibility, it can be a hard slog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a <a href=\"https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/online-business-models\/#services-arbitrage-aka-%e2%80%9cdrop-services%e2%80%9d\">service based internet business<\/a>, it\u2019s probably the case that your initial clients originated from a local community that trusts you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can, work towards growing your business before leaving your home country to give yourself some runway. <a href=\"https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/best-country-to-incorporate-an-online-business\/\">Incorporating in a new country<\/a> and starting from scratch will probably take longer than you think. You don\u2019t want this to be the reason your life in a new country doesn\u2019t work out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"networking\"><\/span>Networking<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you aren&#8217;t among a community of other business owners who can guide or bring business your way, it can slow your growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nowadays there are loads of online communities to call on for support. You know yourself best forever. Most of us have been locked up at home for some portion of 2020. Has this been a great opportunity to grow your business or a misery?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s the former, you may not need much of a local business community to network with. But if you need strong networking opportunities to thrive, lean into that. Here are some of mine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"reliable-internet\"><\/span>Reliable Internet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This one\u2019s a no-brainer but \u2014 for your online business to succeed, a stable internet connection is an absolute must.<br><br>If you\u2019re living in a country that already has fast internet, you won\u2019t think much of this. But move into a city where setting up client calls is an absolute nightmare and you\u2019ll see what I mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that most entrepreneurial countries that you encounter will have stable internet, especially if they\u2019re a hub for tech and startups, but don\u2019t be complacent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my home city of Adelaide there are still houses that struggle to get internet speeds that most third world countries put to shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"transit-hubs\"><\/span>Transit Hubs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you plan to travel often to your warehouse, see business partners or go to events, certain locations will be better than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Singapore, where 45 minutes in a taxi to the airport is the worst case scenario, is much more convenient for flights than where I am in landlocked Andorra, where I need to drive into Spain just to access an airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing a country with a good geographical location and easy access to airports is a big deciding factor for most people. Definitely. Does that make <a href=\"https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/living-in-andorra\/\">living in Andorra<\/a> any less awesome for an entrepreneur like myself? Definitely not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stunning landscapes aside, <a href=\"https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/residency-in-andorra\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2322\">residency in Andorra<\/a> is an interesting option for investors and entrepreneurs. Many come for reasonable taxation policies and end up staying for breathtaking views and a high quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/andorra-company-registration\/\">Companies registered in Andorra<\/a> pay up to 10% in tax, but in reality, resident companies will end up paying less than 10%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same goes for personal income. <a href=\"https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/tax-in-andorra\/\">Andorra&#8217;s tax system<\/a> is very fair, with most residents paying closer to 5% after everything is considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Compte propi&#8217; involves employing yourself through your own company. Medell\u00edn in particular has become a real hot spot in the last decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As long as you can prove that you have US $3500 in income \u2013 whether from rent, annuity or interest; you qualify for Colombia\u2019s \u201cRentista\u201d visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a temporary residency visa for 3 years, renewed every 3 years. After 5 years it can be converted into a permanent residency visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colombia unfortunately doesn\u2019t offer residents the same tax benefits some other countries in this list do. For foreign investors and entrepreneurs, Georgia offers 4 types of residence permits. These are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Work Residence:<\/strong> for those who have founded\/registered a company in Georgia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Investment Residence:<\/strong> 5-year visa for those investing at least $300,000 USD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Short-Term Residence:<\/strong> 1-year visa from a $100,000 USD investment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Permanent Residence:<\/strong> those with the Investment Residence can apply for this after 5 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tbilisi, the country\u2019s capital and where most new residents choose to call home, is also one of the world&#8217;s least expensive cities for expats. For entrepreneurs looking to escape the city grind without giving up the daily hustle, it doesn\u2019t get any better than this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the many <s>Aussies<\/s>expats that flock to Bali, the networking opportunities are many. The only tricky part is the visa system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting a visa that allows long stays isn\u2019t as straightforward as you\u2019d expect, with many foreigners choosing to live on tourist and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/hobowithalaptop.com\/digital-nomad-bali-guide\">sosial budaya<\/a>\u201d (family and friends) visas. The summary is for many people, 60 day visas are as good as it gets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A positive outcome of the covid situation seems to be that Indonesia is changing their tax and residency systems to cater to expats, so hopefully this becomes a much better option in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In comparison to other developed economies, Bali has a low cost of living. You can easily apply for the Malaysia Tech Entrepreneur program and stay anywhere from one to five years in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the MM2H program is on hold, I\u2019m hopeful that a newer and better one will take its place. Fast forward to the present and Malta is now a booming hub for tech, blockchain and gambling startups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you happen to do business in this space, Malta could be a place worth exploring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The taxation system is a little complicated but ends with most residents paying a fairly nominal rate \u2014 similar to those you\u2019d see in Andorra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For securing residency in Malta, both the Individual Investor Programme and Malta Residence Programme are great options. The latter requires you to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Buy a home worth at least \u20ac220,000 or spend at least \u20ac8,750 per year in rent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prove that you are financially self-sufficient<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not spend more than 183 days in any other country each year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As to whether or not it&#8217;s a good fit for you from a lifestyle point of view will depend. As the country slowly makes it onto the radar of location independent communities, the expat community grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many brand Montenegro a tax haven due to its low headline tax rate of 9%. I can only assume that the Montenegrin government sees this as a great way to attract expats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving to Montenegro isn\u2019t difficult either. Its geographical location makes it a great option for those wanting to operate their business in US time zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though not personally a place I\u2019d like to live long term, Panama does have one of the easiest residency programs that you\u2019ll find. That is, up front investment is very low, and your time commitment to maintain your residency is ridiculously easy to satisfy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s \u201cFriendly Nations\u201d visa opens doors to 50 countries all over the world. Those holding a passport from any one of the 50 countries mentioned on the Friendly Nations list can apply for work and residency almost immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for taxation, Panama operates on a territorial tax system meaning income earned outside of Panama may not be taxable. It\u2019s about as warm as it gets during Europe\u2019s winters, so it\u2019s no surprise that so many expats migrate down to Portugal as summer comes to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To attract business owners from all over the world, Portugal introduced their non-habitual residency program, or \u201cNHR\u201d in 2009. The EntrePass visa was created keeping this in mind. In a nutshell, this visa was designed for foreign entrepreneurs to set up business in Singapore and\/or relocate in order to sustain it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residency by investment is also another option but a very expensive affair. The Global Investor Programme (GIP) lets you apply for permanent residency by investing S$2.5 million in either a startup or a GIP-approved fund which invests in Singapore based companies for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the cost of living in Singapore isn\u2019t cheap, it\u2019s hard to deny the top-notch quality of life that you gain in return. Singapore ranks #1 in Asia for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Most competitive economy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Political stability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protection of intellectual property<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not usually a fan of big cities, but Singapore is an exception I\u2019d make. Somehow they\u2019ve managed to walk the line between skyscrapers and green gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With great healthcare, low crime and a thriving business ecosystem \u2014 Singapore certainly has a lot to offer. The food scene is awesome, and very affordable given the quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of the cities, Taiwan has loads of lush parks and mountains to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it hard to get residence there? Not at all. Taiwan&#8217;s &#8220;Gold Card&#8221; gives you a 3 year visa that allows you to work within the country&#8217;s borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your scenario there can be tax benefits too, with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>a 50% tax exemption on income exceeding NT$3m (~US$105,000)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tax exemption on overseas income<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the primary Gold Card visa holder has residence, dependents can apply for their visas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need proof of income that is at least NT$160,000 (~$5,600) per month. You\u2019ll find a vast community of digital nomads and expats who\u2019ve adopted the country as their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not difficult to see what brings so many online entrepreneurs to Thailand, considering its:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>affordable cost of living<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>excellent private healthcare facilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>low crime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tropical climate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that air quality can be an issue in some locations. Many of my friends leave their home base in Chiang Mai during the \u201csmoky season\u201d. It\u2019s a good excuse to take a holiday for a lot of people but if you have kids and don\u2019t want to disrupt their home life it\u2019s something to keep in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for residency, Thailand is another classic South East Asian case of most people gaming the system. Ask many people there and they\u2019ll be living on tourist visas. That absolutely does not appeal to me (imagine being told you can\u2019t return to your home while doing a visa run?), but the good news is there\u2019s a better option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the Thailand Elite visa, you can live in Thailand for up to 20 years without having to stress about paperwork or frequent visits to the immigration office. It\u2019s technically not a residence visa, just a very long tourist visa, so it doesn\u2019t give you permission to work locally, start a business, get involved with the Thai tax system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bangkok-thailand-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Bangkok in Thailand\" class=\"wp-image-1302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bangkok-thailand-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bangkok-thailand-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bangkok-thailand-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bangkok-thailand-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bangkok-thailand.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">But whatever you do, don&#8217;t move to Bangkok to avoid traffic jams.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"usa\"><\/span>USA<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No list would be complete without mentioning the US of A. Whatever your opinions on recent events there, let\u2019s remember it is a large country. The US has a number of cities that offer internet entrepreneurs everything they need. Decent internet, access to airports, a pro-business culture, loads of networking opportunities \u2014 you name it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the many cities I could mention, it\u2019s very clear that there\u2019s a migration to Austin, Texas happening, and rightly so. Long known for its music scene, the city has become quite a hub for <a href=\"https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/lifestyle-business-definition-ideas-examples\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1002\">lifestyle business<\/a> owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn\u2019t hurt that Texas has no state income tax either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another option to consider is Scottsdale, Arizona. Many online entrepreneurs (and offline!) and investors call Scottsdale home, giving it a great business community, while also allowing them plenty of access to the great outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re already a US citizen, relocating within your country is easy, but for foreigners that\u2019s not the case. It&#8217;s easy to check a <a href=\"https:\/\/jaserodley.com\/countries-without-income-tax\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2542\">list of income tax free countries<\/a>, but living there is a different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being an internet entrepreneur opens up a lot of doors.
